From Dusty Tapes to Digital Gold: My Journey into Home Movie Restoration

Hi! Welcome to my little niche of the internet. This is the story of how I fell in love with home movie restoration and created something called LifeFlix.

The Spark That Ignited a Passion

Tokyo, during the late 70’s and early 80’s was in the midst of a consumer electronics revolution. And my brother and I enjoyed every part of it. We spent the weekends exploring Akihabara, Japan's buzzing heart of gadgets and gizmos. We were tinkerers at heart, forever thrilled by early prototypes of tech marvels like the Walkman and Betamax camcorders.

Flash forward to 2013. By this time, we had spent more than 20 years in the video technology industry, so we had what was basically a horde of memories stored on Video8, Hi8, Digital8, MiniDV, HDV, and VHS tapes. With expanding families and an avalanche of home videos featuring our kids, we faced a dilemma: a Mount Fuji of memories trapped in outdated formats.

The Hunt for a Solution

We tried using heavy-duty software like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere. They were great for editing but felt like overkill for our goal—just getting our tapes digitized. Even iMovie let us down when it stopped supporting our vintage camcorders. It was frustrating. We had to find a simpler, better way to do it. And that’s how LifeFlix started.
